S is for Soursop
Today, we are diving into the world of Soursop (Annona muricata)!
Soursop has a spiky skin, milky, juicy pulp, and dark brown/black seeds. Its flavour is uniquely pleasant, with a combination of sweet and sour notes that create a creamy taste.
Soursops are widely cultivated across tropical regions, including Africa, Europe, Asia, Australia, and North and South America. This large green fruit comes in various shapes, including round, oval, and heart-shaped, and can weigh up to 8kg.
Soursops are rich in several nutrients and offer a variety of health benefits. They are high in calories and moisture content and contain proteins, fats, and carbohydrates. Soursops are an excellent source of dietary fibre, which helps regulate digestion and supports gut health.
They are also packed with essential vitamins and minerals, including Vitamin C, B vitamins (B1, B2, B5, B12), potassium, copper, iron, zinc, calcium, and magnesium.
Research has shown that 100g of soursop provides around 140 calories, 35g carbohydrates, 2g protein and 7g dietary fibre.
Some of the benefits include:
➡️ Protecting cells from damage caused by free radicals.
➡️ Reducing the risk of non-communicable diseases, including cardiovascular conditions, type 2 diabetes, and certain types of cancer.
➡️ Combating micronutrient deficiencies due to the presence of various essential vitamins and minerals.
➡️ Enhancing immune function and promoting fast wound healing, thanks to Vitamin C.
➡️ Supporting bone health through manganese, which also aids in digestion and reproduction.
➡️ Protecting brain health with the presence of B vitamins.
