Rest is a system that restores balance; it lowers our heart rate, reduces adrenaline and cortisol in the body, and redirects blood back to the internal organs. In this "Rest and Digest" state, our bodies have a more effective immune response and natural ability to self-heal.

Tips on how to best add good quality rest into your everyday routine

1. Be kind to yourself: a rest doesn’t need to be earned

We’ve been conditioned to think that we do not need rest – I will sleep when I’m dead was a very famous saying just a few years ago! For success in life yes hard work is vital but not at the expense of your health. Health really does mean wealth. Trying out a new way of thinking can help you prioritize your rest and make you feel less guilty or anxious about taking much-needed breaks and time to recharge.

2. Schedule your breaks

Schedule your breaks on your day via the use of notifications from a smart device. When busy at work it is very easy to let a predetermined break slip. When the alert goes off, remind yourself that you will be more productive if you take this break. Smile, stand, and move.

3. Create different types of rest breaks and see what works for you

Sometimes, life happens. A meeting runs over, you need to step in for a co-worker, or your kid gets sent home sick. Let variety be the spice of the “restful” life by incorporating different styles at different times and recording how you feel after each one. Examples include:

5 min stretch

5 min listening to music

5 min walk

15 min meditation

10 min breathing exercise

20 min nap at lunch

…the list is endless

4. Soursop leaves

Enjoy a cup of soursop leaf tea with your rest breaks and record the effects you feel in comparison to when not using the leaves. You may be very surprised at what you discover.
